An 8th–9th-century Moorish hilltop fortress above Sintra, its battlements zigzagging along the ridgeline with sweeping views to the Atlantic — surrendered peacefully after the 1147 fall of Lisbon, and now part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Landscape of Sintra.
